Trip Overview
We’ve taken some of our clients’ favorite activities and combined them into one GREAT trip! Snorkel with friendly sea lions and among tropical fish, kayak the turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez, walk among giant cactus or try your hand at fishing.
Upon arrival to the famous Espiritu Santo Island (ESI) National Park you’ll settle into our beautiful camp on a white sand beach caressed by turquoise waters with volcanic cliffs and towering cactus as back drop. Camp is comprised of walk-in tents, each complete with 2 cots, pads and pillows for a restful nights sleep.
Without having to move camp daily* our flexible itinerary facilitates a variety of activities for a variety of interests. Our professional guides will provide sea kayaking excursions tailored to abilities from beginner to advanced paddlers. Motorized boats/skiffs skillfully operated by our experienced captains will transport folks to and from the island and accompany the trip. As we kayak or travel by boat along the shores of ESI it’s common to see manta rays and dolphins leaping from the sea’s surface.
Having skiffs accompany your trip allows you to participate in activities not possible if traveling by kayak alone. We can motor to snorkeling “hot spots” including a sea lion rookery where we snorkel among these graceful creatures enjoying their playful and curious nature first hand. The skiffs are also available for those who prefer to ride along rather than kayak.
Don’t miss this opportunity to possibly combine all these spectacular wildlife events with kayaking, snorkeling , hiking and fishing while camping in comfort at our luxury camp on the beautiful island of Espiritu Santo.
* Due to potential new National Park regulations, we may need to move camp once during this trip

The Experience
Our Trip Book
Soulful and uproarious, Untamed is both an intimate memoir and a galvanizing wake-up call. It is the story of how one woman learned that a responsible mother is not one who slowly dies for her children, but one who shows them how to fully live. It navigates divorce, forming a new blended family, and discovering that the brokenness or wholeness of a family depends not on its structure but on each member’s ability to bring her full self to the table. And it is the story of how each of us can begin to trust ourselves enough to set boundaries, make peace with our bodies, honor our anger and heartbreak, and unleash our truest, wildest instincts so that we become women who can finally look at ourselves and say: There She Is.
Trip Specific Info
We're thrilled to have special guest, Patricia Soto, world famous Chilean mountaineer and pioneering woman, joining us for a couple days mid trip. She will share her story and walk with us through both the literal wild lands of Patagonia and the figurative exploration of wilderness within ourselves.
Cuisine
Patagonian food is known for its rich flavors, hearty dishes, and colorful presentation. The food is often made with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients - like lamb and fish in this region - and is influenced by European immigration.
Packing Tips
Prioritize clothing that will dry quickly and that can be layered so that you can easily adapt to different weather. Having the right footwear is potentially the most critical piece. We will provide a complete planning guide, including a detailed suggested packing list.
We Host Your Journey
We provide space and time for self reflection, as well as thoughtful prompts and various sized group discussions around themes in our trip book. You'll also receive a blank journal in which to process new ideas. Following our trip, we'll gather again online to explore how we're integrating new clarity and holding each other gently accountable to new life patterns that honor our individual voices.
Activities
Expect moderate physical demands. Although this is a world famous destination for mountaineers wanting to test their mettle, we are going to stick to well trodden paths that do not require technical skill to navigate. Our itinerary combines short, rewarding hikes with some more challenging scenic adventures. We encourage everyone to check out our pre-trip conditioning guide to feel extra ready for these hikes. The more prepared you are the more energy you will have to spend engaging with the group and the landscape around you.
Accommodations
While we're immersed in a wild environment, we'll be traveling in style, staying where we can enjoy vistas from the comfort of a toasty dwelling, our bellies full on privately catered food! From a lovely lodge in El Chalten, to a night in a cozy refugio at the base of a glacial lake, to some time in eco domes that this area is known for, you'll be comfortable and in awe of the majestic views.
Weather
January is peak of summer in Patagonia, offering warm days, long daylight hours, and ideal conditions for hiking and exploring. Though this is the driest month, still be prepared for potential strong winds and some rain. Temperatures typically range from the low 60s to the low 70s Fahrenheit (15-22°C) during the day, with cooler nights.

HHJ requires that you obtain travel insurance in case of unexpected medical circumstances, or the need for evacuation. We want you to make a decision that meets your needs. We also highly recommend you obtain cancellation insurance. Though we do not recommend specific companies, travel industry colleagues have recommended the following companies: AIG Travel, Alliance, Seven Corners, Travelguard, and WorldNomads. We also have an HHJ "sister" with whom we often arrange trip insurance, so let us know if you'd like her information. You might also see what your credit card offers, and many airlines now offer travel insurance.

The planning guide that we provide all registered guests who are paid in full includes a full trip itinerary, packing list, supportive travel information, release forms for you to review/sign/return to us, information on our trip book, and other supporting materials. Plan to arrive into Aeropuerto Internacional Comandante Armando Tola de El Calafate (FTE) in Argentina by 1 PM on December 31. We will meet our group at the airport and transfer to our first accommodation in El Chalten.
The best flights into El Calafate come from Buenos Aires, Argentina. We recommend flying into Buenos Aires, spending the night, then catching a morning flight to El Calafate from there.
For departure, we will stay near the airport (FTE) the night prior to departure, so you are free to plan your flight when it works best for you. -
Please check your passport well in advance of your departure date to make sure that it is valid: There are no visa requirements for American citizens to travel to Argentina; all that's needed to enter is a valid passport and a plane ticket.
Non-US citizens need a passport that is valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Argentina to enter the country. The passport must also have at least two blank pages. In addition to a valid passport, non-US citizens may need to provide other documents to enter Argentina. Please confirm requirements for your home country.
